Waihi Beach is our secret weekend getaway. Seeking a short break from the hustle and bustle of Auckland? Start the weekend early and head to Waihi Beach, which is within a 2-hour drive. Whether you want to go for a short weekend or make it a long weekend trip, here are our recommendations.
Make the trip a little longer and beat the work week by leaving a day early. Take your time driving down to Waihi Beach. If you feel adventurous, go for a short hike through Karangahake Gorge. Put your feet up at Beach Pacific Apartments and get some take-away from one of the local eateries right in the heart of The Village.
After breakfast walk down to the beach and take in the beautiful ocean views and pristine white sand. Back at The Village pick up some goodies for a picnic lunch at Orokawa Bay. Start your hike at the north end of Waihi Beach. The 45-minute walk gives you time to relax and unwind. Once you reach the bay you will be amazed by the pohutukawa trees and crashing waves, in stark contrast to the calm and safe waters at Waihi Beach.
You deserve a treat after the hike! Stop at a café along Waihi beach for coffee or ice cream.
Dinner can be as fancy or relaxed as you like. The Village offers classic NZ fare, fish & chips and much more. You can find plenty of options listed here: The Village Waihi Beach. If you want to venture a bit further drive to Bowentown or Waihi.
If you are visiting during summer check out the local Sunday market with fresh produce from the region or stop at Café Strata for a relaxing breakfast. Before you head back home, go to the beach for one last swim and have a stroll around The Village for some retail therapy.
We hope you’ll fall in love with Waihi Beach and enjoy it as much as we do. See you soon!
